Proper Thinking for the Chiropractor

I guess this discussion will fall under the category of Chiropractic Philosophy. I have a true burning in my heart for this type of philosophy and I am sure I will spend many a blog on the subject. I think, sometimes, we really get our thinking screwed up as chiropractors and to demonstrate this let me tell you a recent, real-life story.
A short time ago, one of my mentors suffered a heart attack–possibly more than one–which resulted in him having a quadruple bypass. He is in his late 70′s, did very well after the procedure, and continues to do so as we speak.
With the chiropractic profession, especially in the technique circles, we tend to hear things like, “If he had been adjusted this way or that way”, or “See chiropractic is not for heart conditions”, and so on. I find it funny how every time a patient or, in this case a chiropractor himself, has a serious condition we tend to blame chiropractic for it, whether it is perceived as a lack of care, or lack of the proper care, which has caused or allowed the condition to progress. We hear “Gosh, if his atlas had been in adjustment” Or “Man, if only he had been getting his T2/T3 adjusted” or, insert your favorite technique here _____________, the result is the same–chiropractic is at fault!
This kind of thinking is skewed, and sadly, is exactly what I have heard in, and from, the chiropractic community since I was attending chiropractic school.
I started with this story of my mentor because when we hear the rest of the story, it will indicate how we should view this type of situation.
My mentor, as I said, is in his late 70′s and has lived the chiropractic lifestyle since he was a child, first having his eyes uncrossed as a child, then having his intestines saved from surgery both by chiropractic procedures.
He became a chiropractor and has been adjusted his entire adult life and has dozens of stories of conditions and maladies that have gone away because of chiropractic care. In fact, this recent heart condition scenario happened while my mentor was spending several days being adjusted by one of the best chiropractors in the world today.
So how did he have a heart attack if one of the best adjusters in the world was adjusting him? The key is how we phrase it. How about, thank God, he was being adjusted, or he probably would not have made it.
Who knows how much better his body was able to handle this crisis due to the fact that he was getting adjusted that week (and has been adjusted nearly his entire life). Moreover, he was able to do extremely well with a triple bypass procedure in his late 70′s!
As I always say, I would rather have a heart attack in adjustment, than a heart attack out of adjustment. If I have to have a crisis, I want my body working at 100% of its potential.
I hope this story has inspired you to think about the need for everyone, with every condition, to have chiropractic care. I continue to pray for my mentor’s complete recovery, and I thank God that he has come through this procedure well. In addition, I know that he will continue to be adjusted until the day he joins the Lord.
