Two Techniques Required for Success in Chiropractic

Two Techniques Required for Success in Chiropractic

Looking back it seems ridiculous, but hindsight is always 20/20. Unfortunately, as chiropractors we are lead to believe certain things which are generally accepted by the profession. One of the things I was lead to believe is that your adjusting technique would determine your level of success. Trust me, I can talk adjusting techniques all day, but my intention is not to discount the importance of having a solid adjusting technique that you are confident in and gets results. My purpose is for you to appreciate what I have learned.

There really are only two techniques needed in every practice, your adjusting technique, of course, and your patient-management technique.

What do I mean by patient-management technique? Ask yourself how good are your people skills, how well do you manage the patient and are you in control of your office?

It is one thing to be able to find and correct a subluxation, but something completely different to be able to get the patient to understand the need, follow your recommendations, and stay under your care long enough to really get well.

Here is my experience to sum this up. I was running a pretty decent sized practice in the late 90′s. I was very “into” my adjusting techniques, took all the training, studied it, purchased all the equipment, and essentially became a master.

I am not trying to sound egotistical, but I was very good at my adjusting techniques and they served me well. I spent tens of thousands of dollars to develop them to that level. However, my practice hit a plateau and I could not grow it beyond a certain point no matter what I tried.

That is when, for the first time in my career, I sought out help for the “other techniques” that were required in my practice. I started investing money and time into learning how to manage the patient instead of only being concerned with how to adjust them. And wah lah! My already good-sized practice doubled in 4 months!

That was the kicker for me. I figured out that if my patient management technique stinks, then I would never have a chance to deliver my adjusting technique, no matter how good I am with it. Or, at least, I would not have the chance to deliver it to as many people as I should be. Working hard on my “other technique” in my practice enabled me to get to capacity and eventually bring on associate doctors to relieve the capacity block.
