#1 Chiropractic Wish: More New Patients
February 10th, 2010 // 8:00 am @ Dr. Todd Osborne // 2 Comments
We tend to think that just because we went to chiropractic college, spent a huge sum of money to do so, and, were able to pass our boards that we are somehow entitled to new patients to grow our chiropractic practice. Unfortunately, our “wish” for new patients does not produce them.
This brings me to my point of today, “Never Complain About Anything You Permit”. I hear chiropractors complaining all the time, I can’t get referrals, I can’t get any new patients. They spend hordes of energy on complaining and very little to no energy on actually doing something to get new patients. Thus, they are permitting the low number of new patients coming into their chiropractic practice because they either refuse to do the things needed to get new patients, or they don’t know what those things are that will create new patients.
Do you have your year long effective chiropractic marketing plan in place? Have you created a plan to get new patients? What internal marketing are you doing to stimulate referrals? Are you handing out cards, are you doing your patient health class, are you giving your patients the opportunity to refer? Are you getting out of your office to meet people, do health talks, conduct screenings, business and neighborhood surveys? How well is your staff trained regarding referrals? These are just a few ways off the top of my head on how you could be spending energy to produce new patients, there are dozens more. Which ones are you doing, or should you be doing?
If you don’t know what some of these are, or don’t know how to do them correctly so they are productive and profitable then maybe you need do some research to find out or find a chiropractic consultant or chiropractic management company that has a system for you to put in place to help you gain the coveted new patients that you want to grow your practice.
When it comes down to it, there are many ways to get new patients. The real question is not “Why Can’t I get new patients?”, it is “What can I do to get new patients?”. If you can answer the real question, then stop complaining, it is a waste of your time and energy, do something to get the new patients you want. If you don’t know how, then find out!

Dr. Osborne,
I could not agree more, while several chiropractors around me complained last year about their business being down my office is up 20% over the last year during the “recession.” You post reminds me of one of my favorite quotes by Thomas Edison “Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.” Many chiropractors just want to blame it on the economy, instead of putting in the work.

Amen Dr. Sullivan. You are exactly right. Rather than take responsibility many would rather cast blame and excuses for their situation. It amazes me how well chiropractic has always done in a recession, but most chiropractors tend to jump on the band wagon of the media and the masses. I work with hundreds of chiropractors that grew their practice last year by leaps and bounds and they are tough to convince that their is a recession, just like I am having a real difficulty with global warming today as it is snowing like crazy in Georgia! Recession, I choose not to participate!
