Insurance Proof Your Practice

Insurance Proof Your Practice

I am writing this on a flight returning from a great meeting in Dallas.  The chiropractors that attended were inspired and I was inspired teaching them as always. There is something about getting together with a group of chiropractors that are dedicated to growing their practice and reaching as many people as possible with quality chiropractic care.

Our theme for the weekend was “Insurance Proofing Your Practice” and of course the chiropractors were hungry for this topic.  Not everyone wants to run a cash practice, but why not utilize a system that allows you to do so if you choose.  In todays chiropractic market and insurance world, nearly every patient is some sort of cash patient. Hardly a patient comes into our offices now that does not have to pay something out of their pocket and more than likely a lot out of their pocket.  Instead of learning to do more insurance, we should be learning the age old art of cash practicing, even if we are going to accept insurance.  Why not accept insurance out of convenience rather than necessity?

In the offices that are very successful cash practices and those that are doing 70-90% cash, there are of course several keys that allows their business to prosper.  I will share with you 3 of those keys today.  The big kahuna of the three is the doctor’s conviction and belief in chiropractic and the service they provide.  If you in your heart do not believe you are more than a pain doctor and that you offer an extremely valuable service, you will not get patients to buy in.  The second, which is just as important as the first, is that the staff has the conviction and belief also.  This would actually be #1, but the doctor has to train, lead, and develop the staff, therefore without the doctor’s belief and conviction, the staff will never have it.  The third is having the practice procedures and protocols in place to educate the patient, not in the typical sense of “educating the patient”, but in the sense that your procedures should be educating the patient about their condition, the seriousness of it, what can be done about it, and what the future holds for them so they can make an informed intelligent choice about their health and spending money to regain it.

There are other factors, but I can promise you that without the three above you will likely struggle in any type of chiropractic practice, but for sure you will never be able to practice cash only or have a business that is insurance proof.

    Dr. Oz,

My heart goes out to chiropractors that feel “strapped” by insurance companies. How aweful it must feel everyday to have patients accept or decline care based on whether or not insurance companies will pick up the bill. We do accept a few insurances in our offices but it is merely viewed as a “coupon” for the care they really need. God bless AMC for teaching the procedures neccessary to practice this way. What a freedom!

    Dr. Oz,

I am one week removed from your presentation in St. Louis and it was by far one of the best few hours of the year so far. I realized a few wake up moments in the course of the day the main one being getting back the conviction and belief in chiropractic and the service we provide. Somehow that got lost with me by being to focused on the stressful things; finances, the loss of my father recently and all the other factors in life. I can see now that getting back to my core beliefs about chiropractic is an absolute must not only for me but members in my community.
    Thanks.

You are welcome Dr. Crawford, glad you enjoyed the class(es). We all need to stay in touch with our true purpose and be reminded so we can keep on the straight and narrow path.
