Part 2 Hire Good People, Develop Great Staff

When I was in full time practice, I would have many doctors come observe as our office was a training center for my chiropractic management company. I had an awesome staff and many times the visiting doctors would make a comment that they could do bigger numbers similar to me if they could hire the staff that I had. I would quickly tell them and I am telling you that you don’t hire great staff, you develop great staff! You hire good people, and then give them the opportunities to develop into great staff.
Here is the problem, it takes work and effort! I know, as chiropractors most of us just want to show up and adjust people, we don’t like the paperwork, dealing with staff, and overall management, just let me get my hands on people and adjust them. We think that we should just hire someone decent, spend a day or two “showing them the ropes” and then expect them to be incredible staff members that help us see many more patients. Nope, doesn’t work that way. If you are not going to put in the effort to train and develop the people you hire, you will just keep going thru the old cycle of chiropractic staff turnover. Get rid of one and hire another expecting a different result the next time. And before long you can even get into the rut of thinking I don’t even want staff, it is not worth all the headaches!
Do you spend time and invest money in the training of your staff? Do you have daily morning meetings and weekly staff meetings? Do you take your staff for weekends where they can learn to do their job better? Does your staff take ownership in your practice or do they show up to get a paycheck? All these are questions you need to ask yourself.
My staff become so good at their career, that I could leave the office and know that things were going to be done and done correctly when I was away. Yes, I was important, but not as important as the staff. I could be gone for a week, leaving my associate and staff their and all was fine. Couldn’t say the staff could be gone for a week and all would be fine!
Take the time to to start investing in your staff. Help them develop into all they can be. You will then have long term career minded staff taking ownership of their job and your practice. And then it will be so much easier to deliver chiropractic care to many more people.
