Chiropractic Gate Keeper

More than ever before the chiropractic profession must fight to keep the “Gate Keeper” status for the profession. We would be so easily squelched out if we would ever lose this vital role. As you may know my opinion is that I do not even want chiropractic included into “National Health Care”. I would rather take our chances outside of a government managed system. Seems we never win in those! However, one of the reasons over the years that chiropractic has fought hard for inclusion is due to keeping our Gate Keeper status. In other words, with Gate Keeper status we are considered a primary physician. In essence, patients can choose us first, they do not have to go to another professional and then can only receive our treatment unless referred. So you can see why it is so important to keep this status.
So the question then arises, is it worth being inside the system to retain the Gate Keeper status? Or would it be easier for them to change that status once we are inside the system? If we are in the system and maintain Gate Keeper status, then can we even make a living? We have already had a taste of all of this from major medical insurance and managed care programs. I don’t know about you, but I don’t like that taste enough to want to take another big bite! Ideally, if we could maintain that status outside the system it would be the best for chiropractic. Something for you to chew on.

Dr. Osborne,
Maybe you are aware of this, maybe not. After some research I found that we as chiropractors are the ONLY provider group that cannot ‘opt out’ of medicare. We have to either be a par or non-par provider. All other provider groups can opt completely out. Crazy but true.

Dr. Deal, I was aware other fields could opt out, but did not know we are the only ones that can not! Wow, I think that solidifies my point that we have to be careful what we sign up for! Appreciate your feedback! Thanks
