It’s All About You Patient

We all like to talk about ourselves, it is a natural human instinct. Most of us have probably heard the Toby Keith song, “I Want To Talk About Me” and can relate with the lyrics. We as chiropractors need to realize that our practice is not about us, it is about our patients. Though our patients may be interested in us and our personal lives, it is not about us, it is about them. We need to keep it that way. Besides the fact that we need to be very careful not to create a “friendship” type practice, your success with patients will improve dramatically if you talk about them rather than yourself. I just finished rereading “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie. Many of you have probably read the book, if you haven’t get it as soon as possible, it is a classic for dealing with people. The main theme if we can boil it all down is this, talk about them and their needs, not about yours.
I remember a story a chiropractor told me one time. His wife and he had just had a new baby. A patient that was coming in overheard the doctor and CA saying something about the new little one, and the patient said, “You didn’t tell me you had a new baby”. The chiropractor replied, “That’s because in this office it is not about me, it is about you and your health.” To which the patient replied, “Yes, that’s right!”
Try avoiding talking about you and what you want. Talk only about them and what they want and see what happens. A great project is what I call the “You, Your, Yours” exercise. For one whole week in the office, you are not allowed to say the words I, me, or mine. You can only say you, your, or yours. This will get you into the habit of asking questions and talking about the patient, their health, and what they want and need. If this does become a habit, you be more liked by your patients than ever before, you will be more respected, and you will get better overall results. And of course all this points toward you growing your chiropractic business.

Yes Dr. Plemon, it is a great little ‘exercise’ that you can do anytime in your office to develop your ability to focus on the patient’s life and health!

Thanks Dr. Peer. Seems we all need to be reminded of this from time to time.
