How long has it been since you have had your “fire” relit? We as chiropractors tend to be on an island, an island bombarded by negativity toward our profession and our philosophy. It is easy to get beaten down and start slipping. Once that happens the quality of our thinking regresses and so goes our results and our practice numbers. We need each other. As much as I love technology and what we can accomplish from our own little island now, we have remain aware of the need for us to gather together. It is inspiring and fulfilling to know that you are not the “only one”, and others are experiencing the same thing you are experiencing. To be able to share friendship and fellowship with other D.C.’s whether you are attending a chiropractic management weekend, a technique seminar, or other type of training is something we all need to keep our batteries charged.

Recently someone told me, we do church all wrong in our society today. We come to church to be filled, when actually we should come to church filled and pour it out. I think we as chiropractors may do the same thing with our practice, going there expecting to be filled, rather than going in filled ready to pour it out on our patients. And we all know where that gets us.

Get to a chiropractic gathering of some sort and get your chiropractic tank filled, then go home and pour it out on your patients and your practice will grow. To steal a line from one of my mentors, if you can go be around a bunch of purpose minded chiropractors and that doesn’t light your fire, then your wood must be wet!

It’s difficult to keep your chiropractic fire burning when your on an island where almost everyone throws water on you all the time. My fire is lit, how about yours?

Here are some examples of the errors I was making communicating with patients. “I want to get some x-rays of your spine, I want you to use ice on this…., I want to see you again on Monday”. It really comes down to the fact that it has nothing to do with what I (or you) want, it is about what the patient needs. See if it sounds better this way, “You need to get some x-rays of your spine, you need to use ice on this…., you need to be here on Monday.

Yes I understand that you as a chiropractor want the patient to get well, you want to do the procedures that are needed for them to get well, you want to be successful in your chiropractic business, you want to make and income in your business, but this is not the way to communicate with patients. The new patient comes to the chiropractic office with a need, the ultimate driving force that gets them to walk through your door. The theme should be “their need”, don’t flip it over to your wants.

If it come right down to my wants, then I want every patient to get adjusted one time, I want them to hold that adjustment, I want them to send in everyone they know, and I want everyone to pay $10,000 cash for each adjustment. No, it is about what the patient needs. I must base my care, recommendations, procedures on what the patient needs.

If you will base everything on patient needs and communicate in that manner, it will make a difference in your patient compliance and chiropractic practice success.

It is much more fun seeing 15 patient visits in 90 minutes than in 8 hours. It takes a lot less energy and you are able to be a better chiropractor to your patients when you schedule this way, you tend to get in a flow, in the zone if you will. You will never be better at serving your patients and removing subluxations than if you are in the flow. And it is much easier to get in the flow a couple of times a day, rather than trying to recreate it 15 times a day for 1 patient.

Use your time wisely in your practice, you will be a better doctor, help more people, and get more new patients! Remember, if you don’t create and control your schedule someone else will……

I wonder how well the chiropractic profession would do as a whole if all chiropractors were living unsubluxated lives? I bet if we could get the statistics that chiropractors that are unsubluxated have larger practices and bigger businesses than chiropractors walking around with their innate compromised. And just like your staff, don’t you think you are better promoter of your product when you are living it? To me it’s kind of like when a person 75 pounds overweight is trying to sell me on a weight loss program or exercise program! Although you patients may not be able to actually see that you are subluxated, I wonder if they can feel it, sense it with their innate?

For some, you may have an associate doctor right in your own office, great! For others it may be more of a commitment to maintain your own health. You may have to schedule time, drive a distance, plan your schedule around taking care of yourself. Gosh, almost sounds like what we ask patients to do??!!!

If you are staying in adjustment, fantastic, keep it up and keep serving people with and unobstructed innate. If you are not getting regular chiropractic care, then make the changes necessary to do so. You are worth it and your patient’s health is worth it! Start “living” chiropractic instead of just preaching it and you will see more patients, your practice will grow, and obviously your income will also. Get adjusted!

To another level, are you adjusting your staff only when they ask? Just when they are hurting? Or do you go through the entire new patient process with them, put them on a care plan, and then keep them checked regularly so they can have optimum chiropractic results and health? If you aren’t, why not? What I’m getting at is this. Your staff assigns a value to your care, just like you do. What do they know in order to assign that value? I want them to know not only what chiropractic is, but be a living testimonial of it. Make your care part of the benefits package of working in your office. What better health perk could there be?

Plus, who performs better at work, people under chiropractic care or those who are not? Do healthy people do a better job? There is nothing but good from making sure your staff is benefiting from the care that you offer in your office. “Align” your staff and they will be better at aligning your office and your practice growth.

And where did this closed on Friday’s thing come from? I don’t know if a lot of schools are off on Fridays or where everyone got the “3 day” weekend schedule, but that one is a practice killer for most. I know some of you will say, “no one comes in on Fridays anyway”, and you are exactly right because you don’t want anyone to come in on Fridays! Funny, my busiest day of the week was always Friday, wonder why that was? Here is the thing, everyone wants to feel their best for the weekend, plus chiropractic business is by the majority blue collar people. Who gets paid on Fridays? Friday will be what you want it to be.

Another factor is having decent office hours set up, but the doctor comes in late if no one is scheduled and then leaves early if no one is scheduled. Guess what starts happening to the first hour and last hour of the day, do you think they are booked up?

Dr. Tom Owen made an office visit to a chiropractors office one time. He go their at 9:00 sharp when the clinic opened. The doctor finally showed up at 10:15. Dr. Owen asked why he was so late. He responded, “Well no one comes in this early anyway.” To which Dr. Owen responded back, “Yes, and they never will.”

How much business are you missing by not being there physically? How much are you missing by not being their mentally when you are there physically? If you want to double your practice start by being in the office enough to be able to double it. And make sure that you are mentally there when you are in the office. Be there to be there!

Many succeed, in chiropractic or otherwise, simply out of determination. Refusing to accept anything less. The late Dr. Bill Harris, one of chiropractics great consultants and the greatest chiropractic philanthropist yet, used “Determined Persistence” as one of his key speeches. I can still hear him today shouting out in his screechy voice, DP, DP, DP, determined persistence is what it takes to succeed! At the end of one particular talk I heard him give, the chiropractors in the audience were allowed to ask questions. We soon learned that his answer to everyone of our questions was……..Determined Persistence!

So my question today to you, me, all of us, is do we have that determination in our eyes? It is easy to get complacent or defeated and just go with the status quo, but is that really where you want to be? Why not pick out what you are going to achieve in your practice and get determined? The world will step aside (and in line) for the person who knows where they are going! It’s true! The person that knows where they are going and has determination to get there, others recognize the fact they will get there, and follow them so they can get there too.

I remember going to the bank to get a loan for my first practice. I didn’t have balance sheet, rather a debt sheet!! There was no way any bank would give me a loan from what was on the paper work. BUT, I was determined to get the money and start a practice, and determined to be successful. My attitude was this: I’m going to start with the closest bank to where my practice is going to be and start working in an outward radius until I found a bank to loan me the money. Not getting it was not an option. Maybe the banker seen the determination in my eyes, I don’t know for sure, but what I do know is the very first bank I went to loaned me the money.

From there I was determined to succeed and I certainly have. I have had help along the way. Determination to do something does not mean you don’t need to seek solutions and help. But without determination you won’t, you will just stay where you are.

Be very careful how you think, it will determine your future. Many chiropractors may be thinking, well its summer time and a lot of people will be taking vacations, and everyone is so busy with all the summer baseball leagues etc., it is natural for people not to come in as much. WRONG! How about this instead. People are going to be doing more activities that may cause a need for care, or they may have already had a need and been ignoring it until the summer activities amplify the problem. And it’s tough for kids to come in during school so now is a great time to really grow the pediatric side of my practice as they are all out of school for the next couple months. I’m going to have the busy summer ever and go into fall with some momentum rather than waiting til fall to build the momentum.

Don’t take the summer off mentally! People need chiropractic just as much during the summer as any other time of year! Spend the summer building for the fall, not waiting for fall!
